The word "escarpin" comes from the Italian scarpino, meaning "little shoe", and has a long history. The earliest traces date back to ancient Egypt, where servants wore shoes with heels to avoid staining their dresses. In 16th-century France, women wore "chopines", a kind of platform slipper, to avoid soiling their dresses.

Later, the platform shoe was adopted by courtesans and members of the Versailles court, essentially men of the nobility and bourgeoisie, who distinguished themselves in this way and were reminded of their social standing.

It wasn't until the Roaring Twenties that the escarpin as we know it appeared, becoming the feminine shoe par excellence. Women took advantage of the liberation of morals and fashion to wear dresses and short skirts, which they enhanced with classic, low, comfortable pumps.

They wore pumps to go out dancing at night, for walks, with elegance and femininity for all daily activities.

Fashion designers and the great couturiers of the luxury and ready-to-wear sectors seized on this atypical pair of shoes, using materials, cuts, colors and heel shapes, revisiting the pump to give it its letters of nobility, in particular Louboutin, who popularized the pump with his famous red sole.

Which pants to wear with pumps?

Once you've chosen your pair of pumps, there's the question of what to wear! One of the most effective combos is the women's pantsuit with pumps for an androgynous yet feminine look, an elegant black satchel bag and pearl jewelry for a classic, glamorous touch.

Pumps also go well with classic jeans , for example, a pair of pointed-toe pumps with a coil heel can be paired with high-waisted, flared black jeans and a hoodie. It's easy to mix genres with pumps, which add a feminine, sensual touch to a streetwear or casual outfit.

A pair of pumps can also be worn with loose-fitting, satin-finish pants, an oversized boat-neck crop top and a faux crocodile micro handbag for an elegant, refined summer or spring look.

Which pumps to wear when you're curvy?

It's not always easy to find comfortable pumps when you're curvy: you need to be stable enough to be able to walk all day without pain and at ease, so we opt for white pumps with bows and spiral heels, which are thicker and more solid than the stiletto heel. These pumps with coil heels are also recommended for tall women who want to wear feminine heels with a small heel.

For women with wide feet and/or thick ankles who want to wear pumps, we recommend beige pumps with embossed rhinestone bow tie and pointed toe, open at the heel and held firmly in place by a strap.

How to wear pumps to the office?

Women who want to wear a pair of pumps to work or to a business dinner sometimes hesitate for fear of being vulgar and/or making a fashion faux pas.

To be on the safe side, opt for classic nude pumps with stiletto heels, paired with raw blue high-waisted straight or flare jeans and a black turtleneck sweater with balloon sleeves for a romantic 90s touch.

For a glamorous, polished look at work, mix a pair of classic black stiletto pumps with a mid-length black high-waisted pencil skirt and a simple, sober long-sleeved black blouse for an elegant monochrome total look. You can wear the coil-heeled pumps without tights, as the strap holds your foot securely and prevents it from slipping inside.

The pumps are also ideal for a wedding guest outfit, with a short, oversized blazerjacket suit ensemble and mini wrap skirt, a perfect look for a spring engagement ceremony, christening or civil wedding ceremony.

For those who don't like pointed heels and prefer chunky heels, take advantage of our new sandal collection from Brentiny Paris with block-heeled mule sandals with interlaced straps that offer more arch support and reduce the risk of back and foot pain.

This spring, stock up on sandals, flip-flops, flip-flops and wedge espadrilles to enhance your legs and slim your silhouette.
